This is a new concept in Walleye fishing tournaments. We are promoting a ZERO FISH MORTALITY tournament! All fish will be weighed in and released in the boat and all with-in seconds of being caught. This means that no fish will be carried around in a live well or taken to a weigh-in site.
It will be a system where a Spotter will be placed in each boat. The Pro puts the fish in a special tournament supplied weigh sack. The Spotter will record the weight and the fish will be immediately released. There is no weigh scale placed into the jaw of the fish and the stress level of the fish will be substantially reduced as there will not be any length and girth measurements taken, just in the weigh sack and straight back in the water.
Bob Goodfellow, the tournament Director, also says, "because of the shallow aspects the water in the Lac Du Bonnet area, we shouldn't have any issues involving bringing fish up from deep water. Many other lakes support a good population of fish in the 30' to 50' range or deeper, whereas Lac Du Bonnet's fish population is primarily in the 10' to 20' range". This depth and quick releases, elliminates issues of pressure problems on the fish bladders.
The Lac Du Bonnet Community Centre, Tournament officials and Manitoba Fisheries Branch have plans to use funds raised, for "Reel Solutions for Youth" program. We would like to introduce kids to the world fishing in the format of a mini-fishing tournament. The Pros will invite a group of young anglers to share the day on the Lac Du Bonnet town dock and teach them the how-to's of fishing. Things like: tying knots, baiting up, casting, and hopefully fighting fish. "What a great way to introduce young people to a great, lifelong hobby".
